VA Police Officers and their kindness

Time magazine spoke with Police Officers around the country about why the became Police Officers. Today's first person account comes from Senior Patrol Officer Angelo Harris. Hey Officer Harris if your reading this! Keep up the great work.

"On Christmas Day 2001, I got shot in my grandma's front yard. An individual approached me asking if I knew how to get drugs, then a second person came up behind me and tried to reach into my pocket. When the first guy took out a handgun. I turned to run, and that's when I felt the impact near my left knee. My grandparents called the police. The officers were so reassuring. It was remarkable how fast they came up with suspects. It touched me to the point where I wanted to do the same."

Don't you think that Officer Harris has an interesting start. We often want to become or do the thing that affects us the most. This was a life changing event. I'm sure there are hundreds of men and women out there that could share the most amazing stories of why they became a Police Officer or decided to work for Emergency Services.

So you called Fort Worth Police Department

Don't get me wrong when I make this next statement. I love our Veterans but the only thing that I owe you as an EMT and human being is respect. Now I do a lot to help Veterans in the United States. I watch over nearly fifty of them each night that I am at work. Sometimes life is frustration when a man/woman believes that the rules do not apply to them because they are a Veteran.

Tonight I had to deal with two brothers in blue. Thank you for the yummy eye candy but I do not like being made to look like a mean person. I am the type of person that would make sure that you ate before I did. I might not eat anything at all so that you could have some thing to eat. Can you tell why I want to be a Paramedic. I get joy out of helping people.

So the client comes to the front door wanting to come in. The client does not have a late pass. The client demands to be let in because he's a Veteran and that it's cool outside. I inform him of the rules and get him a jacket so that he will be warm outside. The next thing I know, he's talking to two Police Officers. We rarely see a patrol car drive down our street, so I know that the man called them.

One of the Officers comes up to speak with me. I explain to him what the rules are and that everyone has to abide by them. That I'm not going to lose my job because a man did not check the time and decided to leave twelve hours before he wanted to leave. If I didn't have these policies, I would let him in the building but I too have rules that I have to follow.

He nodded and said "I understand."

Just another day working on the job and I thought you would like read about my story in uniform. By the way Officer Afer and partner, thanks for helping out in this situation and I hope that your night was quiet.

Diabetic Medic munching on Snow Fox Summer Rolls

As the Diabetic Medic, I'm always searching for items that I can take to work for meals. I have to admit that some weeks are just boring to the taste buds. A medics life can get busy working sixty hours or more each week. Hours like that can make meal planning a little hard.

Krogers has become my favorite grocery store next to Walmart. I like the fact that the one on University in Fort Worth, Texas is open late at night. It's great to know when the more healthier restaurants are closed and your EMS needs some grub on the fly.

If you get the chance, try Snow Fox Summer Rolls. They can be found in the Sushi area of Krogers. The Summer Rolls with Sweet Chili Sauce is a great combination. The roll itself is a mixture of rice paper wrappers, spinach, carrots, cucumber and avocado pieces. I was surprised by the Sweet Chili Sauce. It was not as hot as I thought it was going to be. This medic does not like overly spicy food.

My only complaint has to be the fact that there are just two Summer Rolls in each Kroger Snow Fox box. For a Dinner idea, I wish that the company would have put three rolls in the box. So my suggestion would be to grab some Sushi along with the Summer Rolls at Krogers.

Ultimately this EMT gives Snow Fox Summer Rolls two thumbs up!

Should EMS be allowed to say "No!"

Tonight a couple of my EMS family members and I were discussing patients that we had run into over the years that we have worked. Since I work at a stationary location, I can't even fathom what it would be like to rush to a scene and find out that the patient is intoxicated. I've had to call for assistance from fellow Police Officers and Paramedics for some really trivial things. So the question comes to mind. Should the Emergency Medical System be allowed to say "No" if a person is intoxicated and doesn't have a traumatic injury/medical illness.

I'm not saying that an Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic arrives on the scene, claims the patient is intoxicated, and leaves. I believe that we should take the time to at least check the persons vitals and medical history. If the person is found simply intoxicated or under the weather than they would be diverted to another option other than the local Emergency Room.

There have been times when I have seen fellow medical responders ask the patient if he/she could possibly wait to go to a medical clinic in the morning. It's not that we as a group do not want to help people. As EMT and Paramedics we see how busy emergency rooms can get. We just want to stop people from using us as a transportation service.

EMT Refresher: Parts of the Brain

Those of you who have been reading my blog posts know that I'm a security officer and part of a first response team in Fort Worth, Texas. I'm currently working towards becoming an EMT. I then would like to become a Paramedic. One day when I'm old and gray I'd like to be an EMT instructor. Who am I kidding. I'll never be old...gray...maybe.

I thought it would be good to put my homework assignments and notes on my blog since I AM Sweet EMT B. What is an EMT B? An Emergency Medical Technician that knows basic life support. So there is some basic information and here's some of the nitty gritty. Please do not use any of this information if you are not licensed in your state. Always call 911 for emergencies.

Parts of the brain are called:
The Cerebrum
The Cerebellum
The Brainstem

The Cerebrum
Outermost portion of the brain
Occupies nearly all of the cranial cavity
Controls sensation, thought, and associative memory
Controls voluntary movement

The Cerebellum
Also known as the small brain
Coordinates muscle activity and maintains balance through impulses from the eyes and ears.
Can not initiate muscle contraction
Can hold muscles in partial contraction

EMT Jokes: How much for lab results

A woman brought a very limp parrot into a veterinary hospital. As she lay her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird's chest. After a moment or two, the Vet shook his head sadly and said, "I'm so sorry, Polly has passed away."

The distressed owner wailed, "Are you sure? I mean, you haven't done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something."

The vet rolled his eyes, shrugged, turned and left the room returning a few moments later with beautiful black Labrador. As the bird's owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the dead parrot from top to bottom. He then looked at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head.

The vet led the dog out but returned a few moments later with a ferret. The ferret ran around the parrot, sniffed, stopped and shook his head at the vet.

Next a cat entered the room. The cat jumped up and also sniffed delicately at the ex-bird. The cat sat back, shook its head, meowed and ran out of the room. The vet looked at the woman and said, "I'm sorry; but like I said, your parrot is most definitely, 100% certifiably ...dead."

He then turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and produced a bill which he handed to the woman. The parrot's owner, still in shock, took the bill. "$150!" she cried. "$150 just to tell me my bird is dead?!"

The vet shrugged. "If you'd taken my word for it, the bill would only have been $20, but with the Lab Report, Pet Scan and the Cat Scan, what did you expect?"

Relationships: Don't feed the attention seekers

You end up not knowing how to deal with them or the relationship you have with them. Perhaps I should sell you a shirt that states "I don't feed the Attention Seekers!"
What is an Attention Seeker? They are the people that are always asking you to do something for them. They are the people that are always making a negative comment about the world around them or something about themselves. Ultimately, the are the people that you feel most drained around.
I believe that we are all put on this earth to help people grow spiritually but there are going to be times when a decision is going to have to be made. Is this relationship healthy for me? So how do you deal with this type of relationship?

  • Ignore them and they may get the drift for a moment
  • Talk to them about how you feel and end the relationship
  • Talk to them about how you feel and put some boundaries on the relationship
What kind of boundaries can be placed on the relationship? If you really value the friendship then make sure that they only come to you with serious issues. Make sure that they know when they are seeking attention and help them nip it in the bud. Help them grow as a person by being kind but being frank with them.

It's healthier when a person learns that they can say "I feel emotionally like crap today. Do you have any suggestions." It's much better than constantly digging for compliments and draining other peoples energy.

Chicken in peanut sauce (EMT cookbook)

Do you know what's for Dinner? Are you looking for a new chicken breast recipe. I love taking this to work and sharing it with fellow EMT and Paramedics. The Chicken recipe works really well when you put the recipe on skewers. Our family is always looking for new healthy recipes for dinner. The chicken in spicy peanut sauce is a mixture of the classic chicken breast and Indonesian spicy peanut sauce.

What you will need to make this chicken breast recipe:
1 TBSP dark brown sugar
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons of creamy peanut butter
1 tablespoons of toasted sesame oil
1/4 cup of low sodium soy sauce
1 tablespoon of sriracha sauce
1 tablespoon of rice vinegar
1/4 cup of warm water
1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lime juice
4-6 thin cut boneless skinless chicken breasts

Preheat broiler, Line a sheet pan with foil

Whisk together the brown sugar, peanut butter, sesame oil, soy sauce, sriracha, vinegar, water and lime juice. Set aside 1/4 cup of the peanut sauce.

Brush chicken with remaining sauce so that the chicken is coated. Place on the waiting pan. Broil until the chicken is just cooked through. This will usually take 10 to 12 minutes.

Diabetic Medic meals for March 13, 2016

Today is my day off from strictly watching my diet. It's day 372 on my weight loss journey. Things are not going really great with my blood sugar. Thankfully I am not where I was with battling Diabetes but I'm not close to where I want to be. This afternoon I clocked in at 187. I want to be back down to 90.

This is what I had to eat during the day. Of course it's not in any particular order:

chicken breast
Serving of cabbage
Serving of grilled beef
Serving of chop suey
KFC Original recipe chicken breast
3 KFC Chicken Littles

My ultimate goal is to just eat protean, vegetables, and fruits. O.k. maybe a few slices of whole grain bread full of nuts. Just because it tastes so good. The truth about having Diabetes and eating healthy in general is just making better choices

Keep your chin up Louisiana

I may be miles apart from you! My prayers go out to you brothers and sisters Paramedics! Keep your chin up Louisiana!

Should bilingual be mandatory?

Since we are on the topic of EMT salaries, I'm sure this question has come up a lot. Should EMT, Paramedics, and EMS be forced to know another language

How much of a salary increase should an employee receive for knowing another language. Or do you believe that knowing another language is just the way life should be.

I have been on several calls where the patient isn't very fluent in English. There have been times when the client doesn't speak a word of English. I have to say that it frustrates me to no end. I'm not frustrated because the other person has decided to not learn a major language. I'm frustrated because there is a road block. I'm unable to give a patient the help that they need in the time that they need it.

I've decided to learn Spanish and Chinese because they are the two largest languages spoken in the United States. Unfortunately, there are no pay bonuses for speaking other languages at work. In truth, I'm learning them so that I can do my job better. Perhaps I can offer tutoring classes in the future for extra money on the side.

After a little research, most companies like Fort Worth Fire Department and Fort Worth Police Department offer $1200 a year to it's bilingual EMS personnel. In truth, that's a nice chunk of change for being an Paramedic and knowing another language. As for being forced to know another language. I would hope that people in this field would want to take the steps to be the best they can be in their career as an EMT and Paramedic.

Medic munching on moon cheese

As I move along my weight loss journey, I'm always looking for new snack to get me along my way. Today I decided to try NutraDried Natural Crunchy Gouda Moon Cheese. The claims of a high protein, natural, gluten free product is an enticement to someone who's fighting Diabetes.

I love the fact  that the Moon Cheese is created from nothing but Pasteurized Milk, Cheese Culture, Salt, Enzymes, and Annatto (Vegetable Coloring). Is it the perfect on the go snack from NutraDried? 5 grams of fat, 21 mg of Cholesterol,
190 mg of Sodium. Is it the healthiest snack out there?

I have to admit that the first bite is pretty tasty. You may have to get use to the crunchiness. NutraDried Natural Crunchy Gouda Moon Cheese is firmer than most cheese snacks. It also seems to be a little more greasier than most natural cheese snacks.

The unfortunate thing is that the Gouda Moon Cheese is only tasty for a few bites. After a while the product takes on a strange taste. I can't tell if it's due to the fact that it's a Gouda flavor or the fact that it's a dried product.

Will I be buying this food product again? That would be a definite "NO" The Gouda Moon Cheese is a product full of flavor but not worth the $5 price tag at Starbucks.

Life inspirations from the universe

I try to take inspiration from God in all kinds of forms. I received a little email this morning. I'm really tired and a little burned out on the job. I was beginning to wonder if I would ever become a Paramedic. The state test seems so far away. There is so much to learn. How can I remember it all.

Then the message read like this:
You can secure an important victory and achieve a long-held aspiration today. This obviously is not an overnight achievement but probably something you've been intermittently pursuing for a long time. Some dreams refuse to die, and this may be the day for one of those dreams to begin to see the light of day in the real world. Be heartened and don't let up now.

Don't touch me EMT

It's not my goal to scare the EMT's and Paramedics that are reading this. In reality, I think that one of the toughest thing for someone who works in the EMS field is obtaining a directive that they don't like. The job is so geared at saving a persons life that when there is a legal document saying "NO!" it's like getting slapped in the face by a client.

Or if you are a family member of someone who is unresponsive but you know their wishes is to die peacefully. Or you are a member of a religion that does not allow resuscitation. An EMT and Paramedic will do everything they
can to respect your wishes but a person is going to receive
medical treatment if there is not a legal document present at
the scene of the accident or illness.

There are four different types of Advance Directives. They are:
  • DNR Order
  • A living will
  • A health care durable power of attorney
  • A physicians orders for life sustaining treatment
A Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) is a legal document or order that covers resuscitation issues only. A DNR will not stop an EMT or Paramedic from providing other types of medical care in the event of trauma or illness.

A living will covers resuscitation and more general health care issues including the use of life support or not.

A Health care durable power of attorney. This is also known as a Health Care Proxy. This document legally allows someone to make medical decision for a Pt. If the Pt. is unable to make that decision for himself/Herself. Many hospitals or long term care facilities will have the Pt. sign this legal document so that decisions can be made on the Pt. behalf.

A Physicians orders for life sustaining treatment (POIST) is usually created if the Pt. is not expected to live more than a year. The legal document allows the Pt. to decide what level of care he wants to receive before resuscitation is needed.

There are times when a Pt or family member of the Pt will say that they have an advance directive but it is not present at that very moment. Until the Pt or family member produces that advance directive consider initiating treatment immediately.

Contact medical direction for instructions on how to proceed.
Continue treatment until the problem has been resolved
Be sure to communicate to the Pt all the risks that may come with not obtaining medical care.

For the EMT and Paramedic, it is important to follow local protocol to keep from obtaining legal action against you. For the patient, it's important to know what you rights are. Ultimately unless a patient can prove that he/she is oriented enough to answer the classic "Person, Place and Time" questions then local EMT and Paramedics will begin medical care.

Fort Worth King Wok San Sien Frangrance

As I'm getting my health together, I'm always looking for meals to benefit my weight loss. With over sixty menu items King Wok of Fort Worth Texas has a lot to offer the taste buds. My friends and I have tried several other Chinese menu items with much success. So we decided to try King Wok San Sien Fragrance.

So how was the ratio of meat to vegetables. How were the side items? Was the hot garlic sauce just too much for the taste buds? This was a major concern for all of us.

King Wok is never cheap on the portions. A person could make three meals out of one item from the menu. The problem with the menu items is the lack of meat and fish. There is never enough shrimp, chicken, and beef. This is a great menu item if a person loves pepper flakes, bell peppers, and onions. Ultimately we felt that we spent one dollar for meat and eight dollars on vegetables.

Was King Wok San Sien heat to much for us? The flavor started out sweet and ended with a high amount of heat. The garlic sauce was so hot that it caused one of my friends to choke on her food. The bland fried rice didn't offer enough comfort to calm the taste buds. I guess we shouldn't have dived in when we saw the red pepper flakes.

Ultimately, King Wok San Sien Fragrance was the wrong choice for our crew of healthy foodies. The sauce and vegetables were a poor cover up for bad portions, bad options, and no flavor.

Sugar free isn't always best for Diabetics

You should have heard the scream of joy for this Diabetic Medic when Werthers Originals announced that sugar free caramels were hitting our local stores. I had given up candy as much as I can for a year. I was craving some really good sweetness. I decided to buy three bags.

Then I was wondering why my blood sugar was in the 200's. Flip over the bag and what do I find? Though Werther's original contains carbohydrates.

What a waste of money when I found out that the hard caramels had sugar alcohol in them and the chewy caramels had cane sugar syrup. How is cane sugar syrup sugar free?

A carbohydrate is a carbohydrate is a carbohydrate. This is the reason why labels need to be read. Of course these Werther original products contain less carbohydrates then their full sugar products. Unfortunately, you can not eat the products to your heart content.

Most Diabetics are allowed 45 to 60 grams of carbohydrates per meal. I'm the type of person where I would rather obtain my fuel through fruits and vegetables. You can guess that I will not be buying this product anymore.

Why did I bring up the subject of Diabetes, sugar alcohols, and this classic product. It's simply a friendly reminder to always read the labels and know what is going into your body. I know that my goal is to live a long and healthy life as a Diabetic. I just want to help you do the same.

Food Review: Jimmy Johns Big John sandwich

Jimmy Johns Big John sandwich is medium rare shaved roast beef on a roll with mayo, lettuce, and tomatos. My husband is a major carnivor, so he loves sandwiches that have a lot of meat. For those of us that are not major meat eaters, this might not be the Jimmy John sandwich to order.

Personally, this Jimmy John sandwich is not one of my favorites on the menu. The roat beef was too satly and really noticable in the sandwich. Pherhaps if the franchise had topped the roast beef with mustard, there would have been less of a salty taste.

I have a feeling that this is due to the fact that the Jimmy John Big John only comes with lettuce and tomatos. When someone orders a Jimmy John Billy Club, the sandwich tastes less salty. So if you really like roast beef then I would suggest spending the extra dollar and getting all the extra goodies

Save a place for me in Heaven EMS Brother

Nothing hurts more than losing an Officer in your community. When they announced the death of Euless Texas Officer David Hofer, all I could think was "Is it one of our locals?" If you have ever watched the reality show "Nightwatch". Well my life is like that. I've come to know many Police Officers by name.

I dread the day when I recognize one of the names. I dread the nightmares when I have to transport one of our own to a local hospital.

Holly from Nightwatch once explained everyone that worked EMS as family. Though I have never met Officer Hofer, my heart goes to his family, as they are my family. I can imagine what his Wife must be experiencing right now. My heart aches that all I can do is pray for her and the family.

Well pray and donate money. Yet I don't think that wearing my blue thin line bracelet and donating to Guns and Hoses is enough. I know that I have dedicated my life to helping people but these men and women. The things that they have to go through to come home safe.

So rest in peace Officer Hofer. You've gone to our eternal home. Watch over us when we need it and kick us in the behind when we are being stupid.

EMS Life in a year!

I can't believe that I will be telling the EMS and Diabetic community that I'm 44. Everyone else in my community too! What a difference that a year makes. It's amazing at what can be accomplished in a year. I just wanted to take a few minutes and several words to celebrate it.

In a year I have:
Become an EMT B
Started working on becoming an EMT A
Lost 118 pounds
Started working on losing another 100 pounds of  body fat
Got out of an unhappy Marriage
Celebrated being at a job that I love for two years
Have my Diabetes under control

Now of course there have been some struggles too:
I lost my friend of 14 years
I lost another friend to suicide
Had some other medical issues
I never got the nerve to ask the FW Police Officer that I had a crush on out for coffee.

What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger, right?

What do I plan for my next 365 days?
I want to be in the next Cowtown marathon
I'll be at the Fire-Rescue St. Patricks Day run
Get further involved in my community
Buy a car
Move to a better neighborhood in FW Texas.

Diabetic Medic drinking Crystal Light Liquid Peach Belini

To keep  drinkers interested Crystal Light Liquid has come out with Peach Bellini. What is a Peach Bellini? A Bellini is a cocktail that is a mixture of peach puree and sparkling wine. So to keep to taste and texture Crystal Light has tried to add a lingering flavor of sparkling wine.

The problem is that the lingering flavor of wine give this Crystal Light Liquid product a really sour aftertaste. That would be fine and well if there was carbonation added to the water. This product just does not work in plain cold water.

Would I recommend this product to family and friends? First I would recommend to buy some carbonated water. Our family mixed this product with ginger ale and it actually tasted a lot better. Club soda did not work well with Crystal Light Liquid because the saltiness of the club soda over
powered the flavor.

Choose another flavor if you have to stick with plain cold water. The mixture of artificial sweetner, peach belini flavors, and other flavors will just leave a bad aftertaste.

Food Review: Fort Worth Jimmy Johns Ultimate Porker

The Jimmy John Ultimate Porker was suggested to my husband and I by someonw who worked at a local Jimmy Johns. I fiugred that since it was an employee suggestion, that the sandwich must be good. Some employees need to keep their suggestions to themselves.

I wish I had not taken the employees recommendation of sandwiches. The Ultimate Porker ended up being a mixture of dry applewood smoked ham and bacon slices. Jimmy John claims "What could be better!" I know what could be better and it's not the Jimmy John Ultimate Porker.

Though perhaps I need to give the Jimmy Johns trade mark sandwich a second chance. I didn't ask for all the extra freebies. Some sandwiches just need extras to give it some umph and make sure that it doesn't taste dry.

Dating in Fort Worth Texas

Maybe I stepped out into the world of dating too soon. I've had a 140 pound weight lost. Why do I still struggle with not liking what I see in the mirror. Sometimes I get frustrated with my own personality. I'll see a guy I find attractive and have no problem flirting with him. Then I'll see myself in the mirror asking "What were you thinking Cate!" and making the internal statement "He doesn't want to date that!"

Maybe it's time to just focus on God, my health, education, weight loss, and career. Maybe it's time to take a year for myself. A sabbatical from the daily stresses of self judgment, public judgment, and internal frustration. Wait, this post is not suppose to be about me.
O.K. it's about me a little bit.

My adventures of online dating in the city of Fort Worth and the state of Texas. I'm surprise to see how so many men are on the opposite ends of the dating spectrum. Some men just want to have sexual fun. Some men are looking for a wife. I guess I should be happy that these guys know what they want out of life. That's one of the reasons why I got divorced. I was too ambitious and he didn't have any ambition.

It's just that I'm in between the online dating spectrum. I'm not looking for a one night stand. I may be looking for friends with benefits. On the other hand, I'm not looking for to get married right away either. I've only been divorced for a year. Information on the divorce is a completely different blog post.

So online dating in Fort Worth, Texas is a strange arena for me. It feels like an obstacle course. A really difficult one when your a girl that likes the guy to make the first move in the world of dating.
